Five major mosques near the center of violent behavior last weekend in Urumqi, the
capital of China's far-west Xinjiang area, were closed on Friday morning.. A same smaller mosque in the city remains open
"Mosques in some responsive areas were closed at their imams' idea," an official in charge of spiritual affairs with the Xinjiang area government said on Friday. ‘Muslims normally execute rituals at home in time of plague or social unrest.’
