NATO assault kills more than 90 in Afghanistan

A NATO airstrike on a pair of hijack fuel trucks early Friday in northern Afghanistan killed at least 90 people , a mix of Taliban militant and civilians, NATO and regional officials said.

Capt. Elizabeth Mathias of NATO's International Security Assistance Force, also known as ISAF, said the military believed there were no civilians near the trucks at the time of the assault.

However, she said that what was later learned, " we know, there were civilians there."

Local Afghan officials were quote as saying in some news reports that nearly half the people killed in the airstrike were civilians who hurried the fuel trucks. Mathias decline to confirm those numbers.
