Day leave cancelled after fatal stabbings

Day leave has been shut down at Thomas Embling Hospital following the stabbing deaths of two inmates.

Psychiatric patient Peko Lakovski was charged yesterday with two counts of murder.

The Herald Sun said Lakovski was considered a low security risk and had been allowed out of the hospital on day leave, and that one third of patients at the 118-bed secure psychiatric hospital were allowed on unescorted day leave in the past year.

The hospital houses mentally ill patients including some offenders referred from the criminal justice system.
