Football: Germany mourning Enke

candlesGermany's national soccer team has canceled its friendly match with Chile on Saturday after its goalkeeper, Robert Enke, was struck and killed by a train on Tuesday, in what police called an apparent suicide.

The president of the German Football Federation (DFB), Theo Zwanziger, told a press discussion the players "needed time to come to terms with the death of Enke."

Enke, 32, died around 6:25 p.m. (12:25 p.m. ET), Hannover police press officer Stefan Wittke said in a statement. "Preliminary police investigations indicate a suicide," Wittke said.

Enke's widow Teresa told gathered media that her husband had been battling depression for six years but had kept his condition from becoming public knowledge. She also confirmed he had left a suicide note.
