Amanda Knox is scared but hopeful

Current news updates, World current newsPERUGIA, Italy - Amanda Knox has told a reporter from her jail cell that she is scared but hopeful after an Italian court sentenced her to 26 years in prison for the assassinate of her British roommate Meredith Kercher.

The 22-year-old American student was speaking in a 10-minute visit by 2 Italian lawmakers along with a couple of reporters in Capanne prison on the outskirts of Perugia.Patricia Thomas, a journalist from Associated Press Television News said Knox was "someone who hasn't given up".

Knox has been jailed for 2 years since she was arrested a few days after the killing of Meredith Kercher in the house the two students shared in this Umbrian university town. Kercher's dead body was found in a swimming pool of blood with her throat slit on November 2, 2007.

Knox's Italian ex-boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, was convicted of the same charges as her and given a 25-year-sentence. After the verdict, Raffaele Sollecito was transferred to another prison. Both claim they are innocent. Defendants in Italian trials can pursue appeals, and Knox's lawyers have expressed hope she will be acquitted in an appeals trial.
