Afghan Officials: Six People Killed In Quran Protest

KABUL -- Afghan officials say 6 people have been killed in southern Afghanistan as protesters claims that international troops destroyed copies of the Quran clashed with security forces.

A NATO spokesman disadvantaged of that the foreign troops desecrated some copies of “Quran” in Sunday's operation in Helmand province.

The top official in Garmsir district said the protest of about 2,000 people turned aggressive Tuesday as demonstrators clashed with security forces, leaving 6 civilians dead. A provincial spokesman confirmed 6 dead but did not say if they were civilians.

NATO forces said only 1 person was killed in the protest - an insurgent sniper who shot at an Afghan official and was killed by NATO.
