Canadian Folk Singer Kate Mcgarrigle Dies At The Age Of 63

Kate McGarrigle was most famous for songs Heart Like a Wheel, Work Song, Cool River and Lying Song. The sisters recorded 10 albums. Kate McGarrigle along with her sister performed in North America, Europe, and the Far East for 3 decades. They also composed and performed music for many movie and television productions.

The sisters were musically educated in a convent and she graduated with a BSC from McGill in math and engineering in 1969.

The National Film Board (NFB) did an animated piece called “The Log Driver's Waltz” based on their song and it was widely played on Canadian television.

In 2006 Kate McGarrigle was diagnosed with cancer. She founded the “The Kate McGarrigle Fund” at the MUHC.

Kate McGarrigle and her sister were invested with the Order of Canada in 1994. McGarrigle was the mother of singers Rufus Wainwright and Martha Wainwright.
