International Olympic Committee recommends gender-test centers

Current news updates, World current news
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is recommending the establishment of special medical centers to cope with cases of athletes with ambiguous sexual characteristics.

The IOC says rules must be put into place for determining the eligibility on a "case by case basis" of athletes whose gender is called into inquiry.

The IOC organized a 2-day conference with medical specialists in Miami to think about guidelines for sex-verification cases. The issue gained global attention previous year when South African runner Caster Semenya was ordered to undergo gender tests. Caster Semenya won the 800 m at the world championships.

IOC medical commission chairman Mr. Arne Ljungqvist tells that the experts agreed on several scientific points for dealing with cases.
