At least 32 people were killed in Iraq on Friday when twin bombs exploded in a crowd of Shia pilgrims making their way to a holy ceremony. More than 154 people were injured in the 3rd assault on public presence the festival in Karbala, a city south of Baghdad.
The violent behavior took place in a week when an Iraqi appeals court decided to lift a ban on candidates related with Saddam Hussein's Sunni regime operation for elections scheduled for March 7. Friday's assault began soon after noon when a parked car bomb exploded just east of 1 of 3 major entrances to Karbala.
The explosion sent throngs of pilgrims running down the main road and directly into the path of a suicide car bomber who detonated the next vehicle. In Iraq, tensions were high this week among Nouri al-Maliki's Shia-led government and Iraq's Sunni politicians over the push to ban a few candidates from next month's voting.
