Risky getting drugs into Mt Eden Prison

The preface of a single entry has made it tougher to smuggle drugs into the Mt Eden & Auckland Central Remand prisons (ACRP), the Department of Corrections said. All workers, visitors & outworkers will now enter the combined site through a single point. They will be searched by using a metal detector & x-ray machine, department spokeswoman said.

This gets the practices at Mt Eden & ACRP into line with other newer prison places around the country, she said. The single point of way in has been created as part of the Mt Eden & ACRP Redevelopment Project.

In the last economic year positive random drug tests on prisoners nationally gave the lowly result while drug tests began in 1998 at 10.5%. The Department of Directions says this is facts that an improved focus on stopping drugs entering prisons is paying off.
