DETROIT – Red Wings forward Johan Franzen will have to settle for a natural hat trick instead of a 4-goal first period.

Johan Franzen was originally credited with scoring a playoff record-tying four goals Thursday night against the San Jose Sharks, but had the first one taken away by a scoring change. Johan Franzen finished the period with 3 goals in a span of 3:26. Todd Bertuzzi earned the one Franzen lost.

Detroit, facing elimination, led 5-0 after the opening frame.

Pittsburgh's Mario Lemieux scored 4 goals in a postseason period en route to an NHL-playoff record five on April 25, 1989, against Philadelphia. Tim Kerr of the Flyers netted 4 in a period on April 13, 1985, versus the New York Rangers.

Franzen's big period put him one goal shy of the Red Wings record for a playoff game. Carl Liscombe scored 4 to set the mark in 1945, and Ted Lindsay matched it in 1955.
