CHICAGO -- Scientists are mystifying over a surprising increase in stomach cancer in young white adults and rates in all other American adults have declined.

Chances for developing stomach cancer are still very low in young adults ages 25 - 39. But a study found the incidence has climbed in the past 3 decades for whites in this age group.

National Cancer Institute (NCI) researchers and colleagues studied new cases of cancer in the lower stomach. Their findings appear in Wednesday's Journal of the American Medical Association (AMA).

Lower stomach cancer has been linked with diets high in salt and salt-preserved foods, also low in fresh fruits and vegetables. Rates have been declining in many countries as of improved food preservation and better hygiene.
