Extremely toxic plutonium is seeping from the injured nuclear power plant in Japan's tsunami blow zone into the soil exterior; officials said Tuesday, heighten concerns about the growing extend of radiation.
Plutonium was detected at several spots exterior the Fukushima Dai-ichi power plant — the first established presence of the hazardously radioactive matter, plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co. said.
There are muscular indications some of the radioactivity is coming from scratched nuclear fuel rods, a worrying increase in the race to bring the power plant under control, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said Tuesday.
"The state of affairs is very grave," Edano told reporters. "We are doing our utmost efforts to surround the damage."
