Captivating the beat of Ngozumpa Glacier in Nepal

Ngozumpa Glacier in Nepal is not the greatest glacier to look at - far from it. It's smothered in a layer of rocky fragments that's fallen from the adjoining cliffs, giving it a very grey, dirty exterior. There, some 25km from the mountain, a gigantic lake is growing behind a load of dumped rock fragments.

The concern is that this great mass of water could eventually breach the garbage dam and plunge down the valley, comprehensive away the Sherpa villages in its path. The risk is not immediate, but it's a condition that needs monitoring, say scientists. The lake, named as Spillway, has the potential to be about 6km long, 1km wide and 100m deep.
