The body of a young girl, which was discovered from a drain at Henderson belongings near where toddler Aisling Symes disappeared a week ago, has been removed from the view.

The dead body was removed shortly after midnight on Monday and to the Auckland Hospital mortuary.

It's also been confirmed that the body is that of a young girl. At a hurriedly convened press conference at the scene at about 9.30pm on Monday night, the officer heading the investigate, Inspector Gary Davey, said it was not known how long the body had been in the drain, nor how it had got there.

A post mortem test of the child's body will be carried out at 9am on Tuesday. Police issued a declaration saying the young child's body had been found shortly before 8pm on Monday.

Firefighters, using tangible cutters, and police had been excavating for about two hours on the possessions on a Henderson street where the two-year-old was last seen a week ago. The wooded property down a long drive adjoins the back of Aisling's deceased grandparents' home.
