Hope lost for man swept to ocean

A 50-year-old Canberra man swept out to sea in southern NSW on Saturday has been given up for dead and the search for his body discarded.

Police and surf lifesavers gave up hope of finding the man at nightfall on Monday after three full days of inclusive searches.

Police say the 50-year-old was swept out to sea at Pebbly Beach, near Batemans Bay at 11am (AEDT) on Saturday while trying to save 22-year-old Stefan Leonte, from Ashfield in western Sydney, who later got himself to shore.

The missing man had been sketching with his daughter until the play occurred.

"It has been a very systematic search, no stone's been left unturned," Andrew Edmund, co-ordinator of South Coast NSW Surf Life Saving branch, said.

"It's sad it's had to end this way but after three days in the water there is no way he could be alive."
