PARIS - Movie director Roman Polanski says letters from followers that he received in a Swiss prison and while under house arrest at his Alpine chalet has been "full of comfort and reason to hope."

Roman Polanski's first public comments since his arrest September 26 at Zurich airport are in a letter transmitted to French philosopher and pal Bernard-Henri Levy who put them online Sunday at the director's ask for.

Polanski says he is "deeply moved" by the sympathy all over the world and says the solidarity has been soothing.

The 76-year-old is waiting to learn whether he will be extradited to the Unites States where he is wanted in Los Angeles (LA) for sentencing for having sex in 1977 with a 13-year-old girl.
