100s of residents of a town in southern Australia are reportedly fleeing a raging wildfire which is threatening their lives and homes.

Officials advised the residents of Port Lincoln to vacate the area on Wednesday, as several houses have been destroyed by the blaze.

"We have unconfirmed reports of losses of 5 to 6 residences. There are other residential and commercial structures under threat," a Country Fire Service spokeswoman told state radio.

Officials fear that soaring heat and strong winds can spread the fire. In the meantime, another bushfire is approaching the town of Kingston in the nearby state of Victoria.

Some 173 people lost their life in fires in the same region less than a year ago.
