8 dead in Virginia shooting, suspect surrenders

A man alleged of shooting and killing 8 people in central Virginia has surrendered to police. Sgt. Thomas Molnar of Virginia State police said 39-year-old Christopher Speight come up to officers at the crime scene around 7 a.m. on Wednesday and turned himself in.

Officers had been swarming the woods, searching for Speight after police found 7 bodies at a home at Appomattox, Va., on Tuesday. Investigators used dogs and heat-sensing equipment during an overnight search.

Someone had earlier shot at a police helicopter, as said by officials. The helicopter's fuel tank was ruptured; forcing the helicopter to land, but no one was injured. Police said 3 of the bodies found at the home were in the house, while 4 others were lying outside.

Earlier, an 8th victim was spotted hardly alive along the side of the road. A deputy who answered the emergency call perceives sound of gunshots. The injured man died on the way to the hospital

Some details have been released about the suspect, a possible motive or his relation to the victims, all adult men as well as women, police said.
