Baby shot dead, allegedly by his mother, near Rockhampton in Queensland

The 22-year-old mother of the baby died in a single-car crash just few minutes after the shooting.

Her ex-partner is in a critical condition after also being shot during with a sequence of events that has shocked the nation.

The 36-year-old man is seriously injured in the hospital with a single gunshot wound, but police are hopeful of interviewing him this morning.

The woman crashed into a tree on Upper Dawson Rd about 10 minutes after the shooting, which happened about 7.50pm yesterday.

Authorities have confirmed she died later in hospital.

Her baby boy suffered a gunshot wound and also died later, at Rockhampton Hospital.

Neighbours found the fatally injured eight-month-old boy after the injured man staggered to their door by seeking help.

The boy and the man were taken to the hospital, but the boy could not be saved.

The man has undergone surgery for a gunshot wound to the stomach and remains in a critical condition.
