Trapped Chilean miners told rescue could take months


Chilean bureaucrats are taking events to alleviate despair among the 33 miners trapped in a collapsed pit after telling them it might be months before rescuer will reach them, according to a account.

Health Minister Jaime Manalich said the official told the group that "they would not be rescued previous to the Fiestas Patrias, and that we hoped to get them out before Christmas," the AFP news organization reported.

Fiesta Patrias is Chile's Independence Day festivity, held on Sept.18.

Manalich told AFP that the miners, who are attentive 2,300 feet subversive, reacted calmly to the news. The group has been attentive since Aug. 5.
