Afghan governor killed in bomb blast attack on mosque

An Afghan governor and key Nato ally in northern Afghanistan has been killed in a bomb attack on a demanding mosque.

Mohammad Omar, governor of the German-garrisoned region of Kunduz, died beside at least 14 others in the explosion and more than 30 were injured.

His killing was the most high profile assassination of an Afghan government bureaucrat in a year and the first time a local governor has been killed since 2008.

Mr Omar had survive three preceding attempts on his life as he struggled to govern a region which has slipped from German manage as the Taliban have sought to drive Nato out.
