IOC scolds Lubomir Visnovsky for taking banned medication at Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has issued a severe warning to Oilers' defenceman Lubomir Visnovsky who, playing in Slovakia's colours at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics, was found to have used pseudoephedrine.

Lubomir Visnovsky was tested February 24 after Team Slovakia's opening round win 4-3 against Norway. Tested again 2 days later, Lubomir Visnovsky was found clean.

The banned substance was contained in anti-cold medication Lubomir Visnovsky had been taking after consultation with Team Slovakia's physician Dalimir Jancovic, and Oilers' trainer Ken Lowe. Lubomir Visnovsky had included information about the medication in the pre-doping control form, adding he was not conscious the substance was on the banned list.

The IOC limited its sanctions against Lubomir Visnovsky to a warning but asked for investigation of both Dr. Jancovic and Ken Lowe.

The Nordic Combined saw the Austrian team winning the gold, after finishing the event in 48 minutes and 55.6 seconds. In the meantime, the Germans had to be satisfied with the bronze medal.

In 86 years at the Winter Olympics, this is the 1st time the United States Nordic Combined Ski Team clinched a silver medal. It was the 1st medal for American Nordic Combined athletes. Previous week, Johnny Spillane won the silver medal in the Steamboat Springs event and became the 1st American who won the medal in this event.

The American team of Spillane, Todd Lodwick, Billy Demong and Brett Camerota ended the event in 49 minutes just 5.2 seconds in excess of the gold medalist Austria.

Vancouver 2010 Olympic cross-country 4X10 Relay: Sweden wins gold

Sweden's men's cross-country team took the gold in the 4X10 relay Wednesday in 1:45:05.4, defeating Czech Republic and France, who took silver and gold respectively. Canada completed the race in 7th position. Canada's Devon Kershaw completed the first leg placing 10th before handing off to his ally Alex Harvey at the Whistler Olympic Park Cross Country skiing stadium Wednesday.

Kershaw completed 28.2 seconds after the pace set by Finland's Sami Jauho Jaervi. The French and Swedish relay teams completed the first leg in 2nd and 3rd place, respectively. Alex Harvey finished the second leg in 9th place prior to handing off to teammate Ivan Babikov.

Alex Harvey crossed the 20 km mark 52 seconds after Sweden's pace-setting time of 55.53.1 minutes. The Czech Republic and France completed the second leg in the number 2 and 3 spots, respectively.

Ivan Babikov finished the third leg in 7th before handing off to teammate George Grey. Ivan Babikov crossed the 30 km mark 50.3 seconds after Anders Soedergren of the pace-setting Swedish team. France and the Czech Republic completed the third leg in 2nd and 3rd place, respectively.

Lubos Bartecko, a Slovakian ice hockey player has suffered a serious head injury, after being struck in the playoffs yesterday. In the 1st period of play Lubos Bartecko collapsed to the ice after being hit by Ole Kristian Tollefsen (Norway).

It seems as though on being struck by Tollefsen’s elbow, Bartecko’s helmet came off and one more Norwegian player Tore Vikingstad ran into him. Unluckily he then had no protection for his head when he plummeted into the ice.

When Lubos Bartecko raised his head from the ice momentarily, a pool of blood could be obviously seen. He then lay still and was stretchered away. The game had to be stopped so that the blood blemish could be scoured from the ice.

Lubos Bartecko, aged 33 spent five seasons in the NHL between 1997 and 2003, and was also in the Slovakian team that won the world championship in the year 2002.

“North America has really come into its own in terms of ice dance,” Meryl Davis said. “This Olympics is a little bit of a turning point again. It is really exciting to be a part of it.”

Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir scored an overall score of 221.57. Virtue and Moir’s program was tender and sensual. Their gentle, slow start showcased their excellent skating skills, their edges so quiet and smooth they appeared to be on top of the ice.

Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin’s routine was very theatrical and highly entertaining. But ice dance has moved way beyond the theater it was ten years ago. The sport now need good, old-fashioned skating skills, power as well as innovation, and Domnina and Shabalin didn’t quite have it.
