'Titanic' co-star Gloria Stuart dies at 100

LOS ANGELES – Gloria Stuart, the 1930s Hollywood beauty who gave up acting for 30 years and later became the oldest Academy Award acting nominee as the spunky survivor in "Titanic," has died. She was 100.

Gloria Stuart died of respiratory failure Sunday night at her Los Angeles home, her daughter, Sylvia Thompson, said Monday. The actress had been diagnosed with lung cancer 5 years ago and had beaten breast cancer about 20 years ago, Thompson said.

"She did not believe in illness. She paid no attention to it, and it served her well," Thompson said. "She had a great life. I'm not sad. I'm happy for her."

In her youth, Stuart was a blond beauty who starred in B pictures as well as some higher-profile ones such as "The Invisible Man," Busby Berkeley's "Gold Diggers of 1935" and two Shirley Temple movies, "Poor Little Rich Girl" and "Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm." But by the mid-1940s she had retired.

'50s pop singer Eddie Fisher dies at age 82

LOS ANGELES – Eddie Fisher, whose huge fame as a pop singer was overshadowed by scandals ending his marriages to Debbie Reynolds and Elizabeth Taylor, has died. He was 82.

His daughter, Tricia Leigh Fisher of Los Angeles, told The Associated Press that Eddie Fisher died Wednesday night at his home in Berkeley of complications from hip surgery.

"Late last evening the world lost a true America icon," Fisher's family said in a statement released by publicist British Reece. "One of the greatest voices of the century passed away. He was an extraordinary talent and a true mensch."

American Fish pulls out of Los Angeles tennis

LOS ANGELES (AFP) – Mardy Fish, who is fresh off his 2nd consecutive title in as many weeks, pulled out of the ATP Farmers Classic tournament.

Tournament officials said the eighth seeded Mardy Fish arrived in Los Angeles for the event but was too fatigued to compete.

Mardy Fish, who is ranked 37th in the world, has won two titles this year (Newport and Atlanta) and is 28-11 overall.
