A British soldier killed in Helmand explosion

A British soldier has been killed in an blast while on foot patrol in Helmand province in Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has said.

The soldier, from the 1st Battalion The Royal Anglian Regiment, dead in an explosion in the Nad-e Ali area on Sunday. Mod spokesman said his next of kin had been informed.

The death is the 1st in 2010 to be confirmed and brings the total number of UK personnel killed in Afghanistan as 2001 to 246.

Mr. Lt Col David Wakefield, spokesman for Task Force Helmand, said of the latest casualty: "His dauntless courage and his sacrifice will not be forgotten."

In the meantime, the US military has confirmed that 4 American soldiers were also killed in a separate blast on Sunday.
